WHAT IS A COLLABORATIVE HOSTEL?

We are creating the First One

We are part of the Collaborative Revolution

What will the world be like in a few years? Why are changes happening at a speed never seen before? In the blink of an eye, we see new companies that are changing the dynamics of countries, people, and markets. Organizations and individuals are working in a more collaborative way, more openly sharing their resources, knowledge, causes…

Co-working spaces are changing the way we work, co-living initiatives, the way we live and the collaborative economy is rapidly emerging covering a wide variety of areas.

We are still developing the idea of what a Collaborative Hostel is; our goal is to create the first one. During the months of August and September 2017, we organized the Collaborative Camps to co-create the concept of Collaborative Hostel.

Anyway, in the following part, we have developed concepts outlining the process, which we would like to share with you.

Beta Definition

A Collaborative Hostel is a modern form of tourist accommodation where the daily dynamics, management and use of the spaces are designed to facilitate that the guests share time and good experiences.

Is it a completely new and breakthrough idea?

No, that’s far away from being the case. Tourist accommodations, in general, have been perfect places to share experiences with others for a long time. The hostels, specifically, are known for having more common areas, activities…

What we are really doing is defining the contribution that guests can make between themselves, the hostel and the place where they are. Opening the possibilities and facilitating the forms of participation and revealing those that were hidden, waiting for the right conditions. We are taking the traditional hosting model and creating a conscious experience that enhances what people and many places have already been doing naturally.

The Rings of Collaboration

They are a reference that we developed to help understand the general dynamics. We recommend that, if you have interest, come to spend a few days here and let things flow. So, whatever type of stay you prefer, you will live the experience of Calalas.

Now we explain the 4 Collaboration Rings:

1 Coliving

People staying for more than 4 weeks. They are inspired by the colivingphilosophy, and can be part of our plan for residents: Hostel Volunteer Program, Digital Nomad Program, Artistic Residency Program, Volunteer Program of a local NGO …; People who have chosen Calalas for a time as a residence. At this level we will establish, above all, formal collaborations, which meet the basic needs of accommodation for which there are pre-established agreements for exchange. Examples: Facilitate the main workshops (Yoga, Spanish…), Chef of kitchen, maintenance…

2 Collaborative Zone

People staying between 2-4 weeks. Formal collaborations can be made according to the needs of the moment and the group, but above all, they will be informal. The informal collaborations are not subject to an exchange program with the Hostel; they are designed with the aim of creating opportunities to connect, to live together, to relate and to contribute to a human and sociable environment. Examples: Propose a dish and help cook it, participate in the care of the plants, and facilitate specific activities…

3 Collaborative Environment

This refers to our guests, usually, people who stay 1-2 weeks and enjoy and participate in workshops, activities, excursions, group meals…. in a collaboratively managed environment. They like this philosophy, promote and share it, and willingly participate in collaborations.

4 Context

It is important to be aware that we are not an NGO, we are a Collaborative Hostel with sensitivity and interest for the place where we are located. Collaborations at this level must be built organically, step by step, in harmony and coordination with local organizations. In this initial stage, our intention is to maintain a relationship with the NGOs of the area, mediating with them in the event that our guests have interest and meet their needs to co-organize volunteer programs and organize/participate in cleaning trips of the natural environments.

What kind of people is Calalas for?

We are a Collaborative Hostel in a rural area right on the coast in the land of the breeze and waves.

We have an open and social atmosphere thanks to the contribution of travelers, digital nomads, surfers, NGO volunteers, musicians, couples, travel bloggers, etc. and ,of course, anyone with a desire to give and receive.

To put it short, we can say that Calalas is for everyone who identifies with our Shared Purpose.

Shared Purpose

I like to be surrounded by interesting people and I’m happy to be able to contribute to good vibes and good times.

Collaborative Hostel Project Manifesto

We want to explore and evaluate the following challenges:

Reinvent

The idea of being a guest. From someone who comes to observe to an active role that can contribute to generate community sense.

Redefine

The way people can choose to travel

Develop

A new take on the old ways of traveling. Something imagined by a millennial generation that values things like an open mind, collaboration, social networking, and more.

Share

Learn and teach in a Global / Local environment

Promote

Global Exchange

Inspire

And empower travelers to be active participants in the world around them.

Create

A fresh, new form of accommodation where travelers share a set of interests, values, personal growth opportunities, intentions therefore experiences.

Thanks to collaborations, Calalas can be managed differently, grow and learn from mistakes and successes. But, above all, thanks to that in Calalas you can live a more human experience.

Advantages of collaboration

We believe that in this type of initiative, the human scale is fundamental. it It requires the contact, the presence, the physical interaction.

In Calalas, collaboration is the common dialogue, and is the best way to communicate to improve relationships..

Collaboration opportunities will be affected by different aspects: the skills of each person, the current needs of the hostel and group, the amount of time available in the day and the duration of stay … but the most important aspect is the good attitude of each one of us ;).

When the level of collaboration increases, your relationship with the place and the people changes…
